rain gear
Posted by Bighorse on Dec 31 2005
I live in Sitka, AK. Thats in SE and coastal rain forest country.  Muskeg has some great advice.  I personally don't wear rain gear when I climb.  I've found there is more benifit to going hard and getting cooled efficiently by the rain than fighting the water from the outside. If you wear the rain gear climbing you just get wet from the inside. I keep my rain gear dry and safe in my pack.  As soon as I stop I don my raingear and conserve my heat. Its not just about Layering.  Its about taking off those layers as needed.  When I stop for camp I'm into dry insulating wear and my rain gear if needed.
Goat hunting is an athletic event.  Your metabolism produces enough heat in a rain to keep you plenty warm if your wearing hydrophobic gear.  If its blowing sideways and Ice/snow conditions thats another story.  I've still done my major mountain assults, 2hr strait climbs from sealevel to goat country, in the snow wearing a light layer and stayed warm.  Ya gota keep fueled, hydrated, and don't stop.  This is where a hydration bladder is super.
So what kind of rain gear do I carry.  I use Helly Hansen industrial strenth rain gear for my pants which I use decending for a wear layer and on the boat.  Its also really handy for field dressing game because it doesn't absorb blood and odors.
For the top I use some breathable fabric, I'm not sure which right now.
I don't plan on staying dry.  The only time I get dry is in the tent or Cabin.  I'm not exagrating when I say it's impossible to stay dry in a rain forest when Its really coming down.  Ya gotta find shelter to really excape it.
Hey for what its worth I shared my eperience.  Enjoy yourself in goat country.
