limiting access
Posted by twodux on Jan 04 2006
Bob, one thing I see happenning is more and more areas being closed to vehicular access for at least part of the season. An example here is the Martin River unit for moose. For the first part of the season, the only way to access the unit is on the Copper River Highway. You can't use a motor vehicle any other place in the unit if you want to hunt then, not even to set up a camp to hike into (I think you can't access the unit for 30 days prior to the season by mechanized means). You can't even take a power boat on the ocean to the far side of the unit and hunt on foot. The unit is 25 or so miles across, wet, brushy, and very hard to get into. As a result, not too many moose are harvested in the early part of the season. A few people take canoes in, and a few moose are shot close to the highway. Then when the unit opens up, you can't hunt the same day you ride in a plane or an airboat.

I've heard there are other units with access restrictions, and that may be ADF&G's answer to units that are getting hit too hard. There will be more areas where hunters will only be allowed to land at established public strips. This may be the only way to keep certain drainages from getting hammered.
