Kodiak Tents
Posted by shphtr on Jan 05 2006
About three years ago my youngest son and I were goat hunting on Kodiak in Oct high above Terror Lake and across the valley from Crown Mt. when we were hit with a 3 day storm. From our camp site on the mountain side above a little man made lake called Shotgun Lake we could see the Shelikof Strait which make for a senic view...except when the storm hit one night. The wind blasts were documented at 95mph I later read in the paper after returning home. The people at the camp site before us must have been experienced Kodiak campers. I don't know what kind of tent they had but they had hammered sharpened 2 foot lengths of 2 x 4's into the ground for tie downs - which we used. We hunkered down in a Bibler Fitzroy and even though I had all 12 tieout secured I still had to lean into the windward side of the tent where the poles crossed during the worse blasts. We also had a megamid securely tied down for our gear and the pole got snaped. Throught out our entire 14 days there that tent was our "safe haven".
It is pretty spacious for two people (esp. for someone who usu'ly sleeps in tiny two man tents for sheep hunting). I would have no problem using it again in the same scenerio. For a bigger tent just as bombproof I would recommend you at least check out the Bibler Bombshelter - 4 person at 9 pounds with two enteries.....On 30 Oct I shot a 10" billy but my son and I ended up siwashing on the mountain top til morning in order to find a safe route down and back to our camp site for our pick up that afternoon.
