Barnes X bullets and expansion

I'm new to reloading and have been loading Barnes X bullets for about a year in various sizes for my .338. I've shot a few caribou and thought they were great, but I always hit bone. Someone recently told me Barnes might not be a good choice because they will often not expand, escpecially at long ranges, or if you don't hit something solid like bones.

Any thoughts?
