[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] Barnes terminal velocity Posted by Jeff L on Feb 02 2006 is important for any bullet. If you talk to TY at Barnes he will tell you that yes they had a few probs with expansion. Velocity? Rate of twist? Who knows, but he said they did slightly alter the nose cavity to aid in initial impact expansion. They also do a test which is chronographed at 500 yds which enables real world impact. A 1 inch section of ballistic media is placed in front of 1/8th inch aluminum sheet. If a round hole approximating the bullet dia., no expansion. If a ragged enlarged hole, expansion. Neat huh? Ty said the threshold for at least 10% above caliber expansion is around 1800 fps. They had reliable expansion at that range. The new MRX bullet, out this spring is supposed to be even better.
