Treadwell Comments
Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 04 2006
Bigmnt,

I'll toss in a thought here.  One of the differences I see between Treadwell's approach and true science is that Treadwell's approach was to interact with the bears, wheras most biologists go to great lengths to simply observe.  Big difference.  Though he certainly captured a lot of close-range footage, some of which was quite captivating, the bears knew he was there and responded to him on several levels.  I suppose a case could be made for the value of such observations in the context of human-bear interaction, however I see this as stepping outside the normal boundaries of true science and stepping into anthropomorphic assumptions about wild animals; assumptions that, in my opinion, led to his death.  If his conclusions were in fact based on sound science, then this great "experiment" was a spectacluar failure and the thing we can learn is to take a different path from that taken by the instructor.
