Confused
Posted by sal on Feb 05 2006
Bigmnt,
I gotta say I'm a little confused with some of the things you've written.
"I do not like it when life support helicopters land in grade school playgrounds and profess to be experts on the uses of firearms and scare the hell out of children."
As an AK Air Guard Rescue guy, I know that WE have done several static displays throughout the state and have NEVER had the reaction you stated from the children.  Quite the opposite.  They love to see the big rescue helicopter, as they identify it as fellow Alaskans coming to the aide of family and village members in need of asistance.
These are the same Alaskans who've done two tours in the mideast with many more to come.
What exactly were you referring to?

Bottom line is that in my opinion, Mr Treadwell gave up his fix of drugs and alcohol, and replaced them with his fix of living amonsgt an apex preditor...the Brown Bear.  It's rather obvious when you understand his failed bid for the limelight of Hollywood.  Instead he was able to bask in the limelight of being labled (by grizzly people, the children he misinformed as to the gentle friendly nature of the bears, and all those out of touch supporters in Hollywood and the East coast who've never even been to Alaska) as the hero of the Katmai Brown Bears.  It was remarkable to see the Grizzly people woman and some pilot standing over what was left of a 3-4 year old bear.  They said "see...6 bears have been poached the year after Tim's death".  How the hell did they know what keilled the bear?  Young bears are killed ALL THE TIME by bigger bears, primarily big old boars.  Lions do the same thing for several reasons; to promote females going into estrus, to supplant a gene pool of another male, or simply to have a meal.  That's how it is at the top of a food chain.  Tim also shows a "Meat Pole" as evidence of a paoching camp.  Yeah, that had to be a meat pole...it couldn't have been a tent or tarp pole.
You could see it in the program.  He was very full of himself, and while I initially thought he was simply a nutbag, I now feel just sad that he was a disturbed individual in search of attention, who's grand search for a cause got himself, an innocent woman and two bears killed.
By the way, the bears that were killed as a result were not "hunted down" as those in the film tried to portray.  They were destroyed out of self-defense by those who were trying to find Tim and his partner...at least what was left of them.  Read the book.  It is a much better character study of the man and the event with ALL perspectives given.
I also have never seen a program pushed so hard by the Discovery Channel.  My family and I watch Discovery and the History Channel often, but make no mistake fellow hunters...they have an agenda as well.
