hi mike,
i'm pretty sure you're correct about a lot of us military folks supporting issues without always knowing long term consequences, but there are a bunch of us that have been here for many years too. i came up in '89. i'm active military and love living here. i  am also saddened at the future for the haul road and will have my "remember when" stories. i think, demographically, it may be "newer people with less hunting money and an ibep", rather than "military" that hits the haul road not completely "alaskanized" in conduct. at least that way, my long term military alaskan buddies and i don't get lumped in to the wrong pile.
to further respectfully submit my point, if you asked 10 people "last september" on the haul road (not without slobs and ticketing and a forum list of complaints) you'd have seen that a large majority of those were civilian residents this time. most all of us from fairbanks were ordered to miss the hunting and fishing season for a year and come to sunny iraq instead. i can't wait to come home, no atv needed.
