I call "Uncle"!
Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 10 2006
Okay guys,

Some of you made a pretty good case for the military, so I'm gonna adjust my earlier claim that military folks are the majority of the problem.  I have a LOT of active and retired military friends up here, some of whom are long-time Alaskans (and yes, they DO collect PFD checks- rightfully so).  Most of the ones I personally know are not in the category I mentioned.  So... Apologies all the way around to ALL folks, military or not, who are not part of the problem here.  There are a lot of you who don't support this initiative.  I appreciate that.  In the case of those of you serving in the armed forces or who did so formerly and currently make your homes here, hats' off to 'ya.  I respect what you've done to make the world a better place, and appreciate more than you know, the months / years you may have spent overseas, trying to make a better world.  Thank You.

Back to the subject at hand... Allow me to re-state my earlier point in light of the above comments.  SHORT-TIMERS who have not been (in the words of a fellow poster here) "Alaskanized", military or not, comprise (in my uneducated view) the majority of supporters of things like this.  It's been my observation that most serious hunters are conservationists at heart and wouldn't dream of tearing up the land simply because they didn't want to walk in.  If this corridor is opened up to ATV access, it will soon be overrun by motorheads, many of whom couldn't care less, because they will be gone long after they "got theirs", leaving the rest of us to deal with the aftermath.

Note to Wilddog:  We're not talking about ATVs driving up and down the road.  Why would anyone do that when they already have a vehicle with a radio, heater, gun rack and beer can holder inside?  We're talking about people driving up, parking on the shoulder of the road (there are very few places to park the Winnebago up there so far, but it's comin'), unloading the four-wheelers and tearing off across the tundra chasing caribou and bears.

Well anyway, my apologies for alienating half the U.S. military with some of my earlier comments.  I guess I got caught up in the moment.  And to think; I almost said the same thing about Fairbanks!

:-))

Regards,

-Mike
