Its not worth it
Posted by The One That Got Away on Feb 10 2006
In my opinion the issue here should not be who to blame for the pending destruction, nor should we exaggerate the problem.  The fact is we know atv use would be destructive to the land (tundra is fragile) even if it takes ten, or twenty or even fifty years to happen because of the size of the area.  we also can safely assume hunting pressure would increase with easier access.  this means larger harvest of caribou, bear, and sheep even if therir behaviors were not changed by increased traffic (more will die)  this means hunting regs will become more restrictive. which means we will be back to less people being able to hunt again.  And lower success rates for those who do.  Also the overall quality of the experience of the hunt will be reduced.  So in the end we will have lower quality hunts for less people in a less pristine and enjoyable enviroment.  All for a couple of years worth of "equal" access.  It just isn't worth it.
I love to hunt and fish, and the north slope is one of my top destinations to do so.  As it stands now I can only afford to hunt there every 3 or 4 years at most, because I have to fly in and float hunt.  This my only option because I am a disabled vet and I can not hike in to hunt.
So when i say I do not approve of this bill, I say so knowing it would benifit me tremendously if it was passed.  But its just not worth it.  I would rather only get to hunt once every 4 years or even once in a lifetime, and have it be a memorable beautiful, pristine hunt then have a few or more years worth of riding a four wheeler around till I find a animal to shoot.
