Mmm... tough call
Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 12 2006
Les,

This is a tough one!

Caribou are probably my favorite animal to hunt overall, because the animal is incredibly beautiful and has such a huge set of antlers.  No two are alike, and it's a blast just looking for a big bull.  Usually when you're into them, you'll see a lot.  It's something everyone should try.

Dall sheep are another favorite, but for different reasons.  I absolutely love the country where they live, and it's close to heaven just to be up there on a mountain where you can see forever.  There's nothing else like it.

Moose.  Wow.  Outlandishly huge antlers, somewhat easy to call, just a huge animal overall.  Nothing is quite as impressive as a really big bull moose.  Packing one out of the woods is a new definition of hurt though.  I love to hunt moose.

I've sorta gotten brown bear out of my system, but I really enjoy taking people brown bear hunting.  It's a different ball game when you're after a critter that can turn the tables on you if you're not at the top of your game.  Unlikely they'll get you, but there's that nagging thought in the back of your mind.

I've often reflected on what makes Alaska hunting unique, and I think it's a combination of knowing you're so far out there that walking out is not really an option, the danger of bears, and the fact that you have to be pretty self-contained and self-confident.  For you folks who haven't yet hunted Alaska, you already know you're missing out.  I hope you can find a way to enjoy it at least once.

Well, that's more than one favorite animal, but that's me, as you know.

-Mike
