so many choices
Posted by holly on Feb 12 2006
this is why i love alaska. big game/small game/ birds. when my greatest problem is trying to decide what to hunt, life is as close to perfect as i can hope for. but decisions must be made, so with no further ado... top pick has to be sheep. i will admit that every time i go, in spite of the fact sheep live in the most beautiful places in alaska, i swear it'll be the last time. i just have never found an easy sheep hunt. climbing mountains every day and being off before dark isn't easy when you don't want to go back down. "siwashing" on top overnight always seems like a great idea until you do it (no fire when this close to sheep). once i chucked my gear out of a plane on top so i wouldn't have to hump it along, but it backfired and i had to drag it all out and relocate away from ewes and lambs to go find rams. so with this myriad of complaints, how come at the end of each hunt i can't wait to do it again? incidentally, if redeploy back home to my family in mid august, the first thing i'm doing is a sheep hunt(we can all wait a few more days to spend time together). i've seen mt goats, they're like sheep but in rougher stuff and they bounce around the crags like a jackrabbit. sorry brwnbr, i think mt goats must be for crazy people. a close 2nd has to be an unguided drop off for caribou with good friends. it's a social hunt. no competition, everyone gets a nice animal, and 10 days camping in comfort, having fun, away from everything. as an aside, pay no attention to bm recommendation for afognak deer. solitude and beauty isn't everything. adding crabs, halibut and sea ducks as a bonus certainly diminishes any desire to do this every year. probably he and i should bear the burden of keeping the wild instincts bread into these blacktails alone.
