18 V & the .22 LR
Posted by Brian Richardson on Feb 12 2006
One Cold winter afternoon I had left the shooting range after a good rimfire session.  I jumped in the truck, got into my Alpine ski race coachin' stuff then headed for the hill.  When I got there the box of .22 shells had spilled loosely into my pocket.  I was a bit behind schedule and had to set a Slalom course ASAP before all my athletes arrived...

In setting the Gates (poles for the course) we use 18 volt rechargeable drills w/ very long 2 ˝’ 2" diameter bits and they go though batteries drained in short order by torque through ice/snow and wintry cold combo - so you always carry a few extra...  Well it just so happens - I inadvertently placed one of those 18 volters in the pocket w/ the pile of .22 LRs!  Not long into course setting the other coach had just come over to lend a hand then BANG! CRACK? POP! RIP?  It was like popcorn except some were exploding right out of my jacket!!!  The other coach looked at me like - What The hell???  It took probably 5 cracks for me to register what the hell for me and grasp what was really going on...  lol!

Happily for us no one was wounded (coaches were the only two on the mountain at the time plus no athletes or any public on the hill).  Opportunely I was wearing insulated leather gloves and snatched that battery out in the next instant.  All smiles now and no significant danger having no chamber pressure, but I know eventually it would have been fire… twice saw other  coaches coats smoldering or singed due to having the very same batteries mixed in unknowingly w/ simply metal object within the pockets.

SO… yes!  You can positively entertain a fire by more means than one and not necessarily by needing to use a gun!
