[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] First big-game rifle- Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 13 2006 My first big-game rifle was a Ruger M77 7mm Rem. Mag. It's a wonderful rifle; a real tack driver. I used it for deer and elk in Oregon, then carried it for several years here. I Alaska, that rifle has taken moose, caribou, black bear, Dall sheep and goat. I know it would kill a bison or a muskox, but I haven't tried it. Since I started guiding I switched to the .375 though, because of those bears. Every time I see that Ruger in the gun cabinet though, I feel a little guilty. I learned how to hunt with that rifle and it means a lot to me. It occupies a place of honor next to the rifle my grandfather was carrying when he was killed by another hunter who "mistook him for a deer".
