Posted by Shoot2Kill on Feb 16 2006 Sounds like you've hunted bears before, but just to throw this back out there..the best advice I received before going after brownies was to not take shots over 100 yards. Can you..yes...do you want to if there is a chance they could get to an alder patch before you put another shell in and get the critical follow up shot...no. Getting closer does a few things...gives your bullet more punch, allows for better shot placement, and gives you a better chance at making the critical follow up shot on a running/wounded bear. When I went, my partner and I chose to both shoot at the same time on the first shot, making sure to get 2 good hits on the bruin. Whoever spotted the bear claimed it if we recovered it since we both shot at it. Doing this we were able to drop both our bears in their tracks...no tracking involved. Advice to get closer to a brown bear seems crazy, but taking long shots on them isn't the smartest thing in my book.
