wounded bear
Posted by anonymous1 on Feb 17 2006
I had the misfortune of obsearving a wounded and lost bear hunt last fall near my home. Father and son both drew after 25 years of trying. They came prepared w/ 338 & 375 plus 3 other relitives for back up and deer hunting. These guys were all experienced Alaskans and had shot other bears. Towards the end of the hunt they took a long shot and hit the bear twice but it did`nt go down befor it got over a ridge and out of site. After a hard chace they may have hit it one more time before it diappeared over the next ridge and into the alders.
They tracked a bloody trail into the alders until dark and the next day found where it had circled back around to near where it was shot and lost all sign and then their hunt period was up and they left on their scheduled pickup with long faces and a wounded bear in the feild.
I don`t know what they could of done different or what all the applicable regs are but I do know they reported their misfortune to ADF&G. Can a hunt period be extended to retrieve a wounded bear?
I would think that after a day or so a dead or seriously wounded animal would attract carion feeders like eagles, crows and magpies. As a result of this misfortune some deer hunters lost out on a real good area for fear of the wounded bear. My advice don`t give up even it means extra expence and don`t stop shooting.
