Interesting question
Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 22 2006
Phil,

Not an easy question.  A while back I read "Alaska Yukon Trophies Won and Lost", and was surprised to read about the huge numbers of animals those three hunters killed in their months-long adventure.  This hunt took place many years ago and they didn't seem to have a problem leaving the meat in the field.  They attempted to dry some of it on a drying rack, but most of it was left to nature.

I agree to an extent that this ethic is popular with folks that have the luxury of hunting for recreation alone (not for survival).  As Mark Richards pointed out some time ago, many folks who do this for food don't look at it as recreation at all.  It's just plain hard work you have to do to feed your family.

I don't think you'll find a definitive answer to this.  Different people have different ethics today, and I think they always did in the past.  Lots of reasons for this, and it gets pretty complicated.

That's my take anyway.

-Mike
