In the so called good-old-days, you killed every animal you saw and shared the animal. You were not being a nice guy, the animal would spoil.
Hopefully someone would share with you.

I would think not until there were freezers to keep the meat was there a need for a want and waste law.
Yes, I know you could can, salt or dry meat but freezing made it practical to preserve meat for a long time. Does anyone know when they invented the freezer?
