My understanding...
Posted by AlaskaHippie on Feb 22 2006
From what I've read in the reports and press about the aftermath and investigation regarding Treadwell, I assumed the hides where left in the field.  I believe the head and paws where removed during the initial in-field necropsy of the assumed "killer" but that took place 2 days after it was put down.  From what I've read (and again I may very well have missed something here) the day the bears where shot the lateness of the day, the deteriorating weather conditions, and the overall desire of the rescue team to depart the scene left them no time to salvage hides.  They had already made the flight in, dispatched the larger of the bears as it "stalked them" from behind, discovered/recovered human remains in a bear cache, as well as other remains strewn about the hilltop.  Dispatched a second sub-adult that pushed inside their comfort zone, all the while watching the wind and rain increase and the ceiling drop as dusk approached.  The storm kept investigators from returning for a couple of days to perform the necropsy, by which time the sub-adult had been all but consumed (one hide lost) and the mature boar ("killer") had been decomposing in the alders.  They removed the human remains from the bloating digestive tract, took the paws and head and left the rest in the field if what I've read is correct.

So, long story short, no hides salvaged.
