Comments on the .375
Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 22 2006
Good questions.

It's been said many times here that the best rifle is one you shoot well.  I agree in principle, however the size of projectile you send downrange, in conjunction with it's speed, is also important.  If you can shoot a .375 well, go for it.  It's my observation that guys with a lot of body mass have a harder time with large calibers than skinny guys.  I believe this is because the larger body mass is harder to move with recoil.  You just sit there and bruise.  The skinny guy might get spun around like a top, but he'll have a smile on his face and come back for more.  An exaggeration, perhaps, but you get the idea.  If recoil is an issue for you, consider a recoil pad and muzzle brake.  Personally I prefer to stay away from muzzle brakes because I don't like them in the field.  Incredibly noisy.  Still, they have their fans.  At the range, don't be too proud to shove some padding between the butt of that rifle and your shoulder.  I do it all the time (there... I can admit it... I'm a wimp)!  Lots of ways to work with this.

You might try shooting a .375 before you commit.  If you're in Anchorage I'd be happy to let you shoot mine if you want.  Just drop me a PM and we'll go to the range.  There are others here who would probably do the same thing for you if asked.

Good luck on your search.  You're in the perfect place to be objective with this, because you're not carrying lots of baggage and opinions and bad habits.  When you get old like the rest of us, you'll have all that and more!

:-))
