Which brings the point
Posted by twodux on Feb 22 2006
Which brings up the point, Why didn't they salvege the hide? If any one of us killed a bear in self defense (and reported it) the troopers would put our feet to the fire to make sure we salveged it. Believe me I know. Last year a buddy had just shot a deer on Hinchinbrook and dressed it and was eating a sandwhich when he heard something and looked up to see a brownie running right at him. He shot it with his sandwhich still hanging out of his mouth. He hauled his deer out and brought it to town and reported the bear. He was told in no uncertain terms that he was going back the next day to salvege the skull and hide or face prosecution and the troopers were going out to investigate. The next day it was blowing 50 but do you think he got off the hook? Nope.....but the troopers decided they didn't need to investigate after all. In other words, they do what's convienient or comfortable for them, but they don't care about you.

That little deal made a big impression with the locals about the advisability of reporting a defense of life shot bear. I'm not saying it's right, but the rules should be the same for government officials as for regular citizens. Somebody enforcing the law should set a good example.
