I grew up in an Indian Village on the Yukon.  Back in the days before snowmachines, and TVs.

Wasting of fish and game was very rare.  Occasionally someone would feed moose to their dogs but that was frowned upon.  Dog Salmon was dog food.  

Because of the lack of freezers, moose were usually hunted very late in the season and hung outside in a cache in large pieces.  Green mold would grow on the outside but the inside was still good meat.

I just seldom saw waste in those days.  It was too much work to get the meat, and berries to let it go to waste.
