Just as, or even more important than the caliber is the fit. Handle lots of different rifles and find one that is comfortable to shoulder and pleasant to carry (since that's what you'll be doing most with it). Take advantage of Mike and any others to shoot as many different calibers and  stocks as you can then buy one from a local gunsmith that can make sure it fits you and customize it if need be rather than getting one from Wal-Mart. Personally I'd recommend a .60 cal flinter as an "all-around" AK rifle, but I'm just warped that way. ;)
