[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] Accuracy vs. Dependability Posted by GunsmithRob on Feb 22 2006 Varmit shooters have very different needs than bear hunters. If a varmit gun fails to feed or extract, no big deal, you're not going to become lunch for a herd of angry prairie dogs, but if you miss by an inch every shot then the gun's no good to you. If you miss by an inch with a bear gun, no big deal, but if that gun fails to feed or extract a round... it, and everything else you own, become no good to you!!! With that in mind I'd look at a gun with controlled round feeding/extraction (more reliable) like a Mauser, Win. 70 (pre-64 style) or the Ruger M77 for a bear gun and a push feed style (more accurate) like the Rem. 700, Savage, Weatherby, etc. for varmits. That's just a general rule of thumb and I'm sure there'll be some responses touting the accuracy of some owners favorite claw extractor models and the dependability of others push feeds, but these rules are a baseline to start forming opinions on.
