Of Course...
Posted by Brian Richardson on Feb 23 2006
Of Course I'm totalllly kiddding...  Matter of fact I think other than Great Northern Guns in Anchorage - Diamond Walmart may still have the last of the Winchester Model 70 .375 H&H rifles on the racks at the Best price by a long shot.

On the subject of .30-'06 or .375 H&H --- as others said, there is big-time middle ground so it would be hard to go wrong wherever in between.  As a first one how about .300 WSM or .325 WSM?  Quite a bit of middle ground eaten up here predominantly for larger non-dangerous game over longer ranges and having less felt recoil than others within this mix.

I would go stainless/synthetic in something fitting that will point reasonably naturally for you.  I differ w/ Mike on the little guy taking the punch better than the big person and think that’s old school accepted wisdom.  Bottom line some folks male or female have a chin so to speak while others in equal form and fitness do not cope as well.  It also comes down to the fit & preference as other posts recommended.  Truth is that as precision shooters we want to keep recoil in check.  Not just for the reason that we do not want to soak up a punch and are wimpy, but more importantly to control the gun and recover to a shooting posture from shot to shot.

You asked about what gun shops to go to…  Go to ‘em all and frequent a few!!!  Even when you don’t buy “the one” you will become a familiar face and with a bit of luck be treated better.  At the same time you’ll be able to recognize a fair asking price, probably dicker, and acquire better deals with certain owners/salespersons when you do decide to fork over the $$$.
