Guided Hunt Costs
Posted by Michael Strahan on Feb 23 2006
Dean,

The "Big Three" game animals in the commercial hunting industry are moose, Dall sheep and brown / grizzly bear, with goat running fourth in line in terms of cost to the hunter.  Prices are all over the place.  I know one guy who offers trophy moose hunts for 12K.  Another I know offers moose for $8,900, and he's in a pretty good area.  One of the differences is that the first guy has airplanes in the air every day spotting game.  Brown / grizzly bear can run you about the same.

I would say that a combo hunt that includes moose, brown bear, black bear, wolf, caribou and wolverine is a bit of a stretch in terms of your chances of bagging everything.  There are places in Alaska where this is possible, but the general rule is that you're not going to find really good hunting for all these species in one area.  I don't know how much time you have though.  Most guided hunts run 10-14 days.  I would say even with 14 days, unless you're relocating somewhere along the line, this will be a tall order.  Still, as far as rates, if you're getting this for 12K that's a pretty good deal in my opinion.  Assuming of course that you're with someone who knows what they're doing, AND who has a good area without a lot of pressure (that in itself can be a challenge these days).

I'd have to wonder if he's gonna charge you for extra air charter fees to get that caribou and blackie out of the field though.  Hard to imagine that he'd do that for free, but everyone is different.

Other costs you might want to look at are license and tag fees (as Longbow mentioned), air charter fees (some outfits charge extra for this), lodging, rental car (if you spend any time in Anchorage on either end of the hunt), trophy expediting fees, and meat processing and transport.  Unless you're already geared for Alaska, I'd plan on spending at least $500 on gear; clothes, raingear, hip boots, pack, etc.  Don't forget to include tip money too!

Hope it helps!

-Mike
