Definately put in trigger time before buying
Posted by Paul H on Feb 23 2006
I'd definately agree with putting in some trigger time before taking the plunge.  As much as I like the bigger bores, I'd say the average guy new to centerfire rifles isn't going to be able to handle the recoil of a medium bore, ie 338 or 375, and it has nothing to do with body size.  A hunting buddy is much smaller than I am, and has a pretty big flinch with his 338, I'm over 200# (need to get under) and shoot a 458 lott from the bench.

I started with a 308 win and thought it kicked bad, and couldn't imagine bigger guns, but I worked up to them.  I'd be hard pressed to suggest going bigger than 30 cal for a first gun, and also highly recomend a good 22 rf for the bulk of your practice.  I'm actually moving down from the bigger guns to the smaller guns because I want a lighter rifle, and am honest with myself that a 7# rig over 30 caliber is brutal, and that toting a 9-10# rig in my arms all day for a week is too much for me.

The #1 thing to help you shooting at the range is to get a Past mag recoil shield, and use double hearing protection, ie ear plugs and muffs.  The past eliminates any bruising to your shoulder, and really takes the sting out of recoil.

If you were a handloader, the 300 win mag or 300 WSM would be far and away the most versatile, they can be dowloaded to 30-30 levels, shoot plenty flat for longer shots on caribou and blac tails, and also sling heavy enough bullets for the largest critters.  The -06 is just as good, but simply gives up a hair on the longer shots.
