Hunting stories/favorite books
Posted by thenarwhal on Feb 23 2006
Several posts have mentioned books lately. "Yukon Trophies" for example. I'd like to know your favorite lesser known, Alaska/Canada hunting stories out there.

What books do you pick up again and again on those long winter nights? What do you lug along in the backpack? Or keep handy when the rain traps you in the tent for two days?

I'm interested in your favorite regional authors and titles, those hidden gems. Jack O'Connor, Townsend Whelan, Jack London and Robert Service wrote some great stuff about the north country; I've read it and will again. Everyone's been through Hemingway's African stories and I re-read Faulkner's "Big Woods" at least once every year for perspective.

But what I want are suggestions on the lesser knowns with ground-truth knowledge of the far north. Walt Prothero is a talented magazine writer whose stories have been collected into book form and he's got some north country stories that are excellent. Fact or fiction, I don't care, I just want regional hunting flavor from someone who's been there and came back with a well crafted sentence.

Tell me what I'm missing.
