I looked at the Barneys pack recently, after returning from a family trip to Texas, and it is clearly the superior pack. I went to the Cabelas store in Buda, Texas (felt like I was going to the Outdoor Mecca) and tried on the Alaskan Extreme. While it appeared well-made and the padding seemed fine, Barneys pack is definitely lighter, better made, and has better straps/padding. Comes down to how much use you expect to put it to, balanced against twice the cost...
