I know this isn't a book, but you absolutely HAVE to pick up a copy of the DVD "This is my Alaska".  This is a DVD of a film that made the circuit in the lower 48 back in the 60's.  Mr. Shebal's wife died tragically while this film was circulating in high schools down south, and it sat in his attic for many years.  He passed away not long ago, but the DVD is available.

More than any other single thing, this video is probably responsible for me moving to Alaska in 1985 (uh... so blame him!:-)).

I think you'll really enjoy it.
