Once in 15 years
Posted by B_M on Feb 26 2006
I've seen one wolverine in about 15 years of hunting up here.  It was on a sheep hunt in the eastern Chugach Mountains and I was about 500 feet above him.  No clear shot, as he was running...but I think I would have just watched anyway.  No real need to kill him, and it was an awesome sight to see.

There is a healthy population of wolverines in many areas of the state, but they're very rare to see.  My brother traps and has pretty good luck with wolverine, so they're there...just not visible.  Kind of similar to lynx in that way.  I've seen two of those over the years, but was only holding a 20 gauge for hare hunting.  That was an amazing experience as well - the lynx just calmly walked by at about 20 yards and didn't bolt when he saw me...just kept ambling along.

Anyhow, don't bother with a wolverine tag, and think carefully about a wolf tag.  They're pretty rare to see as well, though not as rare as the others I mentioned above.
