first rifle
Posted by rainydayhunter on Feb 27 2006
I have a Model Seven in .308 Win that I let my kids shoot when they get big enough to shoulder the rifle comfortably.  I think it would make a great first rifle for your child.  However, I'm not aware of the Model Seven being produced in .270 Win.  The rifle (more correctly, a carbine) is a short action firearm and is not factory chambered for standard length cartridges such as the .270 Win.  It does, however, come in .270 WSM and the non-mag .260.
I, too, had asked for opinions from forum members as to what firearm would be suitable for youngsters to take on an Alaska hunt.  A few suggested that my children should go unarmed.
Anyway, we've changed our minds about hunting in Alaska this year, instead one of my sons who will be 13 years old next year will accompany me to South Africa for a plains game safari.  And he will be bringing a cheapie NEF Survivor single shot rifle chambered for the .308 Win topped with a cheapie Leupold Var X-II 3x9x40.  My boy is a leftie and is more dextrous with the break open action of the NEF than with the right-hand bolt action Remington.
My suggestion is to allow your child to handle/shoot a few different rifles to see which one he (or she) would be most comfortable with.
