[ Return to Contents | Post a Reply | Post a new message ] Options for first rifle Posted by LaneW on Feb 28 2006 I think that the managed recoil rounds in the 700 ADL would be perfect for the one rifle that he can use at 8 and still be very useful as an adult. Since you live in Alaska, I think I would go with the .30-06 version and the 125 grain bullet in the managed recoil. The bullet is only 10gr heavier but the velocity is about 100 fps slower so the recoil should be similar to the .270 managed recoil round. I would have him use foam ear plugs and ear muffs at the range to lower the recoil perception. I would avoid muzzle breaks which can damage his hearing. I would agree with the earlier post about shooting sticks. My son has a Encore muzzleloader in .50cal and its on the heavy side. I started my sons on .243s but that was for 120lb deer, I didn't handload at the time and the manged recoil factory loads weren't available then.
