My wife's gun
Posted by B_M on Mar 02 2006
Jasper-   I went through this last year when my wife decided she wanted a gun (and now she wants a bow as well).  Having your wife as a hunting partner is awesome...you're a lucky man!  From my perspective, you need to put your wife's comfort and enjoyment as the #1 priority here.  If you try to get a gun more suited to your uses or big enough for moose you may end up with a wife that gives up hunting sooner than you think.

After looking at a number of different options, we ended up getting her a Remington Model 7 Youth Rifle in 7mm-08.  That rifle is a joy to shoot for her.  It barely kicks at all, and has a really nice recoil pad.  It also fits her really well, as she's only 5' tall.  A standard size rifle is just too big for her body.  Even if your wife is taller, though, she might enjoy handling something small like the Model 7. (Heck, I enjoy it!)

To my knowledge the 7mm-08 is available in bullet weights up to 140 grain (maybe higher?).  It's totally enough for caribou, sheep and black bear, but maybe a little light for moose.  Personally I would encourage my wife to shoot a moose with her gun - as long as we were within 100 yards and I had a clear chance for a follow-up shot with my gun (no brush nearby, etc.)  I knew that I was giving something up in getting her a somewhat smaller caliber, but if it pays off in her being a life-long hunter with a gun she enjoys....well, then it's totaly worth it!
