Subsistence
Posted by AlaskaCub on Mar 02 2006
I agree with you on your definition of subsistence hunting however where you live things may not be as obvious as where I live. I live in Delta Junction and we are entitled to subsistence hunting.I can tell you first hand that there are people in this town that are hard working folks without much and truly rely on putting a moose or a couple caribou in the freezer every year and rely on that meat dearly. But this is not the case for everyone that lives in Delta. There are a lot of people that take advantage of the subsistence hunts because they are flat out easier than hunting for your meat in non-subsistence areas and they dont do it because they cant afford beef, chicken , or pork. Its just an easy road/snowmachine/ 4 wheeler hunt and they are sure going to take advantage of it. Some of these people have incomes in the 6 digit categories but because they live in Delta they are entitled. Then there are the Russians and that is a long story in itself that I wont even get into because of how much it angers me. I personally am entitled to subsistence and have never used a subsistence tag. But I hunt several times a year from Prudoe and in the case of his year all the way to the Alaska Peninsula. But I personally dont get any satisfaction from the subsistence chaos hunts that take place just south of here I just flat out love to hunt. My opinion is that the subsistence should be issued very much like the Tier II tags at least in areas like mine because it is out of control its not about whether you need the meat its about the fact that you live in an ever growing community that has long been entitled to these tags the folks incomes have got to be taken into consideration. And if you are the family that needs the meat dearly and would like to harvest a moose or a caribou and you dont have a $7000 Polaris 4 wheeler and or a $5-10000 snowmachine you are going to have to burn the $2.60 a gallon gas road hunting because so much pressure gets put on the animals by the guys using their subsistence tags and got all the money in the world to buy the toys to make those hunts easier that those in need dont even get what they are after.Regulations need to be evaluated more often and the actual factors taken into consideration Thats my .02
