Light recoil
Posted by Tony Perkins on Mar 02 2006
Jasper,

First...as stated...it is great you have your wife interested in the outdoors. But I would guess unless you find the right rifle she won't continue.

I am not an expert but alot of people agree that a 30/06 is the maximum caliber/recoil for men. Because it is the max (recoil) the US military have gradually went from 30-06 to .308 to now .223. And they have went semi-auto. Yes the semi-auto gives you rate of fire advantage but it IS easier on the shoulder.

I teach new shooters, mostly woman and kids, every year. I find most can handle a .308 max. The ideal gun for most is a .308 semi-auto. The size; youth, mountain, light weight, ect., depends on the size of the shooter. Not are women are created equal, no intended offense.

I understand that your wife might only use this part time but I would reccomend buying the best gun for her. That might mean a semi-auto .308 or equivalent.

I didn't take this advice with my oldest daughter and lost her as a hunting partner for several years. Cause - too much recoil...she treaded the practice. Cure - weapons appropiate to her ability.
