guides/strahan

Michael brought up a good point below in the "best shot" thread below. He pointed out that clients tend to blame their guide if things don't go their way on a guided hunt. That brings up the subject of misguided expectations.
It seems that more than a few people who spend the money to hire a guide expect specific results or the hunt wasn't a "success". In effect, they are trying to buy success so anything that doesn't meet their expectations of success is going to be blamed on the guide. They don't care that there are variables beyond a guide's control. It doesn't matter to them that a guide runs a first class operation and did everything legally possible to put them on game, they want results. Stir into the mix unethical guides who will go beyond "legal" to score for a client if it means more money and you've got a bad situation. I think the situation is exasperated by the growing # of game farms down south who sit hunters in a tree house and guarantee them an animal, and even guarantee them an animal of a certain "class". This puts the idea into people's heads that they can buy their success. "Hey, I bought a 180 class whitetail down in Texas, what do you mean you can't get me a "book" moose?"
All this puts undue and unneccessary pressure on the many ethical guides we do have here in Alaska. On the one hand they want to do the right thing and on the other hand they may be losing customers to the guys who don't care how they get it done, as long as they're making money.
What can be done? I have a few ideas, but I'll let you guys go first.
