Example of good work by an ad comm
Posted by martentrapper on Mar 03 2006
Even tho state law governs how we divide up who gets to hunt in a certain areas, there are ways for locals to restrict, to some degree, who all can hunt in an area. Here's an example.
At this last Nov. BoG meeting in Kotz, the ad comm from the Anaktuvik Pass area had a proposal to create a Controlled Use Area on the north side of the Brooks in 26A. There is already a controlled use area for all of 26A for moose hunting. This proposal concerned caribou hunting. Despite a lack of biological evidence, i.e. there are plenty of caribou in that area, the ad comm convined the BoG that commercial operators and other airplane users were diverting normal bou migration thru the pass. Members of the ad comm, as well as some members of the public, were at the meeting to testify to the Board members on how all the activity in the area was diverting the bou migration. The Board bought it, and there will now be a controlled use area around there, restricting hunters from using aircraft.
I suppose that bushrat will want to know if I support that restriction. I'm not going to say. What I do support is the ability of ad comms to do research, get info, work with the state, and come up with proposals that benefit the people they represent.
