While a smaller size and caliber may be appropriate now, it may not be as useful in the future. Two great guns to consider are the Remington Mountain Rifle and the Ruger Compact chambered in the 7mm-08. The 7mm-08 has similar balistics to the .270 but has less recoil. Both of these guns will serve him well now, but even more important can be used when he is an adult. These guns and rounds are tack-drivers. My buddy has the Ruger Compact in a 7mm-08 and he can place 3 shots in 1.5 inch group at 200 yards. He shoots a 140 grain Swift Scirocco and it is deadly on deer. Both are light weight, beautiful guns, and will serve him well into his adult life. Something to consider.
