7mm-08 is the Winner
Posted by RedLabel on Mar 03 2006
My Son has been shooting a Rem model 7 / 7mm-08 S/S synthetic stock w/Leupold 2.5X8 for the past two years and he'll be twelve in a couple of months.  He was a little bigger at 120lbs when he started & the factory ammo rocked him a little, but he didn't give up...he now shoots 1.5" groups all day long.  I would definetly let your son shoot a 20ga or light 12ga for a bit or ease him up to shooting with a borrowed .223 or .243 just for kicks. I don't have much use for these two calibers except for coyotes.  IMO the .243 doesn't belong in the deer woods & should be left for the varmits, unless your shooting those dog sized deer if FLA or AL.

The problem with any adult sized rifel is the LOP, even on the model 7 is about 14" & still might be a little long.  The rifle needs to fit your son even tho the gun is only a tad over 6lbs.  The .270 or 30-06 will rock his world with 150gr bullets.  You'll need at least 140gr bullets going after black bear.  We now load Barnes Tripple Shock 140gr bullets at about 2900fps and they have significant less recoil than factory loads.  If you have a wood stocked rifle you can put a deaccelerator pacmar pad to lighten the recoil.  Get your son shooting various firearms & shoot often & he'll get real comfortable, but stay away from the .270.  The model seven is an excellent choice...best action on the market same as the model 700.

Good Shootin......
