Contradicting
Posted by martentrapper on Mar 03 2006
I don't think your walking a very straight trapline here, Mark. I'll see if I can straighten it out.
This all started when I criticized Dave for complaining about the pred control programs even tho he doesn't live in a pred control area. You and I then had a discussion in that thread, about AC's. Here is my QUOTE:
"In general, I would say, Yes, if an ad comm proposes something, people in other parts of the state should respect that. Hopefully, any proposal from an ad comm would be well researched, have F&G support, and be the result of public input from that area also."
What I did not say was that we should respect EVERY proposal from an AC. In the case of pred control, I would venture to say that whereever the BoG has implemented a pred control plan, it has been the result of the circumstances mentioned in my above quote. The biological info, and public input, including input from an AC, support doing pred control in that area. Also supporting the program would be state law, like the intensive management law. (yea, I know, you don't like that law). Taken all together, the work involved by all parties to implement a pred control program should be respected. I wouldn't expect a greenie in Anch, to support or respect it, but a couple hunters like you and Dave, familiar with our system, ought to be able to give the residents of a pred control area ( like northway on this forum) the benefit of the doubt and see if they can accomplish anything.
As to proposal 18 for unit 22c, here's where your trapline starts to swerve. That proposal was not supported by the bio info. There are enough moose in that sub unit to legally have a non res season. What's important, and what makes this proposal a poor example of my words, is the fact that the BoG did not PASS this proposal. I don't think I have suggested that EVERY proposal from EVERY AC is a good one, and should be respected.
You also used proposal 18 to suggest that my statement about moose hunting here was incorrect, or contradictory. Your trapline swerves even further. Using AC proposals as an indication of animal populations and thus good or poor hunting for that species would be an inexact science. However, if one were to couple biological info, recent reg changes by the BoG, and F&G input, I suspect one could get an accurate indication on whether or not hunting for a particular species in an area is good.
It is good that you will continue to question SOME proposals put forth by ACs outside your area. I question some too. I will probably even question some that result in changes to the regs. Hopefully I'll respect those changes and allow the folks in those areas, through the system we have developed, to help manage the resources in their area.
