Big Caliber Obsession!
Posted by AlaskaCub on Mar 04 2006
I thought I would bring this up as I have recently bought my son his first new rifle and after placing posts for advice in several forums I have found something very disturbing. On 3 different forums I was advised against the 270 Win. What is the obsession with big guns? I think that people are too concerned with predators ie: Grizzly/Brown bears eating them everytime they go hunting in Alaska. The 270 winchester with a 140-150 grain premium bullet is an extremely lethal round not to mention a very flat shooter! I know people who have killed grizzly, black bear, moose, caribou, sheep, Elk, Mule deer, Whitetails and will quickly grab that tack driving .270 out of the gun case before the 30's that are stacked right next it.
This past fall I went moose hunting and I could have easily grabbed my 338 or my 300 but I took my 7mm Tikka instead for the single fact that it is a tack driver and it weighs 7 1/2 lbs scoped and with a 150 grain scirrocos dropped a bull moose in its tracks. One shot no tracking required.I have had people tell me that for moose a 300 win mag is the minimum what are you talking about?I think people forget that todays modern ammunition has done a lot for every caliber, with the introduction of bonded bullets that dont explode on impact it changes a lot.
I am also an avid bow hunter and my first black bear was shot with a 300 win mag. I blew an exit hole 8 inches in diameter out of that bear and it ran about 60 yards and died. I have also shot black bears with a 100 grain broadhead flying 245 fps and the bear didn't go 30 yards. What I am getting at is that most animals are not going to go too far with scrambled lungs and or heart no matter the round that caused the damage. When I shoot ungulates I dont aim for the shoulder with that take out their running gear concept, I double lung them or hit the heart. Now with that said I would not reccommend hunting in dense brown bear country by yourself with a 270 win but for the other 6 or 7 big game species of Alaska IMO there is nothing wrong with the .270 especially if you are accurate. I know guys that will flat out tell you they are not the best shot and or they get too excited (buck fever) in the heat of the moment , so they shoot a 338 so even if they dont get a solid hit it'll do so much damage that it wont matter. If that works for you, whatever. But when I put the crosshairs on something and pull the trigger I know its going down!
The other thing people were advising me to do was buy the 30-06, .308 and especially the 7mm-08 as when he gets older thats a better big game caliber. I may be retarded but the ballistic differences between the .270 and the 7mm-08 are miniscule and in most aspects the .270 outperforms the 7mm-08 in energy, speed, and flatter trajectory. Now it may have less recoil than the 270 with factory premium ammo but with lighter loaded 270 ammo till he gets used to the regular factory ammo recoil,in the long run he will have a more effective caliber at least in my opinion. Now when he is ready to hunt grizzly, or brown bear which will be when he is older he can use one of my 30 cal rifles and or I 'll buy him one. I am not one of those anti big caliber guys as I stated I own a lot of guns and I have to be honest, 9 out of 10 times I'll take one of the tack drivers over the 30 +'s. I havent come empty handed too many times because of a poor shot! Not that there is anything wrong with a 30-06(which is too big for my little guy for several years), the .308(never liked that round),and the 7mm-08 (which I once considered purchasing but bought a 270 instead) I just think the 270  is a great all around caliber for super accurate shots.
Anyway just thought I would put this out there and see what you all think. I ended up buying my son a Remington M700 ADL youth in 270 winchester. Got 2 boxes of 115 grain Remington Managed Recoil rounds and we are both pumped!Tell me what you think.
