I am new to this forum but, have had some good experience in Alaska! My first rifle was a 32 win. special which my son has and another I gave to him for his first as well.
Here is real experience which happened to me on Afognak Island in 1980. While fishing at Portage Creek Falls, I was with to other guys, We aere snaking sockeye'e when Roy, "yelled","George"! "there is a bear behind you" . I laughed and then turned. About 100ft. away on the root end of the log was a brown bear. O, god. I jumped into the water and and just made it across the creek. Roy, was yelling and this distracted the bear. I climed up the closet tree only to feel that I had made a human error, my pants were rather messy. I looked down and there I saw the white claws and the teeth. We waited for several hours and finally we were able to make it back to the logging camp.
A few weeks later while bear season was on , I shot a nice brown.
