Wrong about subsistence
Posted by northwestalska on Mar 04 2006
FBSKhunter:

You are so far off base when it comes to subsistence and with your comments the rural-urban divide grows bigger!

We are not all equal as many of us live in areas that require a lot more cash and effort just to do the daily things that you take for granted. Living in Fairbanks you have the option of running down to the Fred Meyers or Safeway to stock up on the sale items that we in rural Alaska can only dream about a few times a year when we fly to town. Many of don’t see fresh fruits and veggies and when it comes to out village we get hammered at the check out! I need to send you some photos of what an apple looks like in Noatak Alaska and then show you the price that rivals the cost of a nice steak at Safeway. And fresh milk….. right! At AC in Kotz it is selling for $7.49 when you can get it! The one thing we can control is our meat supply because we can work our ass off and go out and hunt and fish it. But let’s keep in mind that gas is now costing us between $5.50 and 7.00 a gallon if it is available. So we have to be careful to take meat when it is available and not waste our costly resources.

Yes we could move to Wasilla and find a job but it is our choice to accept the trade off of Safeway vs our ability to get a great deal of our own food through subsistence. So the next time you are driving your SUV that is burning gas at an alarming rate down the highway to go shopping of to take your family out to eat at your local burger joint, those of us way out here will go to the freezer and pull out another package of moose for dinner.

One mans opinion.
