It has to do with the questions and advice given in forums like this. I am just a youngun(21) compared to you guys and have refrained from giving advice on here due to my inexperince, but feel that a lot of wrong or inapropriate(sp)information is given out on these forums. A perfect example of this is the handgun bear defense threads. People who give advice should realize that everyone's situation is different (recoil tolerance, application to be used, ethics). Everytime I hear someone say that a hangun is inadequate for bear defense I cringe. First off I know that it is not equal to a rifle, but I have also tried to hike and flyfish with a rifle and it sucks, hence I make the sacrifice to a handgun, but also I also know its limitations, practice needed, and the proper bullet needed. As for the big caliber obsession I think the advice "take the biggest gun you can shoot accuratly for bears" is sound, but would guess that a lot of people drop off the accuratly part. I can only base this on the numerous guides that come one here and complain about clients showing up with a new magnum and not being able to shoot it. I also beleive that the 30.06 is the greatest round ever invented and feel that this is the round that evertyhing else is compared to.
