270 is a great gun
Posted by 375ultramag on Mar 04 2006
Ed M - No need to duck but remember the people that post the most on here do have quite a bit of Alaska experiance.  Like BRWNBR

Who says a 30 caliber is not a tack driver. What is the most common round for a sniper 308 I beleive. I drive tacks with my 270, 308 norma mag and my 375 ultra mag.  The 270 is a flat fast and very efficiant rifle for big game. However it does lack in energy when it hits. So I think that is why most people up here don't recommend it. There is a big differance in energy and knock down power from a 270 with 140 grain bullets hitting an animal at 100 yards than a 375 Ultra with 300 grain bullets hitting or even a 30-06 with 180 or 280 grain bullets.

Then the question do you need to drive tacks moose hunting. No not for the most part. You do need to be efficiant with your rifle though and be able to consistantly place good groups with it.

I love my 270 it is a great gun. I like the knock down power of my 375 ultra better though so that is what I use in Alaska.

But for your sons first rifle congratulations man. I wish him luck and am sure he will knock something down with it.

The 270 will probably be the first rifle my boys hunt with as well. But papa bear will be right there watching with the 375UM if needed.
