If you dont have a knowledge base that you have established through your own experiences and you jump on a forum asking questions you cant answer yourself, you dont always get good information! There are many people who posts on these forums that truly havent spent much time in Alaska's Wilderness, yet are quick to give all kinds of advice on everything from tents, guns, optics, clothing and anything else outdoors you can think of. The problem is a newby to Alaskas outdoors could take some of the information and run with it and that could be dangerous. I have read posts on bear protection from people that have never even had a close encounter with a bear or shot one for that matter, you can just tell by the way some talk whether or not they have experience. None of us have the answers to everything, but many of us have a lot of answers based on experiences we have had. In the case of seeking advice for my sons first rifle, I had already made a decision of the appropriate caliber based on my knowledge of rifles in general. However I did not have the opportunity to hunt as a small boy and started hunting as a young man so I cant recall my experiences shooting a gun as a child as I never fired a high powered rifle at age 8 weighing 70lbs.
