Gotta stay warm
Posted by martyv on Mar 05 2006
That's always the first thing I think of.  And if you are already wet, which is common here, then you gotta get dry to stay warm.

That means shelter and fire.  In that order.

The one thing I am uncomfortable with is that I don't know how to make a fire without matches.  If I am completely without anything (tools, gun etc) then I can't make a fire, so that means I gotta figure out another way to get warm.  I always carry matches in several water proof containers in different areas.  I put them in my pack, in my jacket and in my pocket on my person.

Then a dry warm shelter.  Depends on if it is winter or summer as to what kind of shelter you make.  It would be nice to have an ax or a knife but I think we all should know how to survive without anything at all.  That's why I want to learn to make a fire without matches.

I don't worry about food and water.  It is pretty rare for someone to die of dehydration in Alaska, and also rare for someone to starve to death.  It's usually injury, drowning, or hypothermia that gets us.
