Prudhoe Bay Caribou
Posted by Sheep Hunter on Mar 06 2006
The reason there are more animals in the area now than before oil production is the caribou can live around men and machines but the bears and wolves can not. Also the caribou like to shelter underneath the pipeline and on the gravel pads. This allows them to escape the relentless bugs. I spent a few years in Prudhoe, caribou always had the right of way. If a driver hit one they would loose their driving privledges and be banned from the privately run and maintained roads. I once had to wait over an hour on my way to Kuparuk one day while about 4000-5000 animals crossed the road. Pretty special. I use to leave the big doors on my shop open in the summer, and several times would go uot there to find a trophy quality bull just hanging out. The science is well documented.
