Hoarding information
Posted by Michael Strahan on Mar 07 2006
Sheep Hunter,

It's an interesting question.  As far as my motives personally, I just want to help people; that's all.  It's the same reason I do some of the other things I do that cost me personally.  Unfortunately it seems that altruistic motives are rare enough that when help is extended with no strings attached, many of us are waiting for the other shoe to drop.  But the fact is that some people just thrive on helping others, whether they benefit in some tangible way or not.  That's the way it is.

For me an equally good question would be why I would hoard information for myself.  I probably do that with certain little spots that would be damaged if everyone knew about them.  I can tell you that I have done that on behalf of other folks, even though I will probably never see "their" spot.

I've been accused of writing "where to go" information in my upcoming book, strictly for the purpose of making money.  But the truth is that writing any book, unless it becomes a million-copy national best seller, is usually a losing proposition on a financial level.  At best you cover expenses and make a little pocket change, from what I hear.  So you have to do it for other reasons.  For me, I just wanted to try another way of sharing information with hunters besides doing seminars (which I've been doing for many years).

A recent Google search on a handful of well known float hunting rivers here in Alaska yielded over a million hits on some of them.  Most were well over 10,000 hits.  So there is already a wealth of information (of variable quality) out there.

I guess I'm rambling again... hopefully I'm making some sense to someone out there.  There will always be disagreements over sharing information with ANYONE, but I guess I just prefer to treat folks the way I'd like to be treated.  That doesn't make me a better person than someone with different views, it just makes me different.  I understand protectionism, and agree with a lot of it, but I draw the line in a different spot.

-Mike
